Happy Customers
For over 47 years, Root River Hardwoods has been more than just a sawmill—we’ve been a part of the land, the industry, and the people who rely on quality wood products. What started as a small mill in Preston, Minnesota, has grown into a full-scale forestry, sawmill, lumber, and millworks operation, built on the same values that started it all: hard work, craftsmanship, and integrity.
From forest to finish, we deliver.

A Small Mill with Big Ambitions

In 1968, Webster Lumber Company purchased Hewitt Sawmill and renamed it Root River Hardwoods. Under the leadership of Dick Bahl, Mike Merritt, and Jeff Wand, the sawmill became known for its high-quality hardwood production and commitment to precision. The early years were tough. The mill produced just 1.5 million board feet of lumber annually, but with dedication and smart investment, production steadily increased. By the time the next generation of leadership stepped in, Root River had become a trusted supplier for furniture makers, builders, and manufacturers across the Midwest.

Growing with the Industry

Over the decades, Root River expanded beyond traditional sawmilling. By investing in kiln-drying, custom millwork, and advanced milling technology, we evolved into a company that could offer more than just lumber—we became a full-service wood products manufacturer. Our commitment to responsible forestry also grew. With our own logging crews and sustainable harvesting practices, we ensured that every tree was put to its best use—balancing the needs of landowners, loggers, and the environment. As demand for custom millwork and architectural wood products grew, we adapted.  We outfitted our millwork division with state-of-the-art Weinig moulders and built relationships with luxury home builders, architects, and contractors who needed precision-crafted woodwork for high-end projects.

Root River Hardwoods Today

In 2025, friends Ryan Pasco and Adrian Johnson acquired Root River Hardwoods, ensuring long-term growth while preserving the values, leadership, and expertise that built the business. With the additional expertise of CEO, Jon Summers, Root River Hardwoods continues to be led by the same trusted team that has shaped it for decades. Mike Merritt, Jeff Wand, Andy Bahl, and Brett Merritt remain involved at the helm, bringing their deep industry knowledge and hands-on experience to every part of the business. From forestry and sawmilling to kiln-dried lumber and custom millwork, our team remains committed to the same craftsmanship, service, and integrity that have defined Root River since the beginning—while embracing new opportunities for the future.
